Senior Year | How to Pack for College!

There are few things as daunting as packing for college, but it must be done! I’m so proud of the amazing seniors I have had the privilege of meeting as a senior photographer. They are all so bright, funny, and eager to take on the world, that I know that will do great things at college and beyond. Are you headed off to college? Here is a packing tip list just for you, courtesy of Paige Pearson Photography!

collegeBedding: This is a great place to start, especially if you’re in a dorm room. Your bed will take up the majority of most dorm rooms, so it will set the tone for your decor. Look for the basics, like a mattress cover, and add luxury items like a foam topper for comfort, and a mattress pad. Then move to the fun part, and choose sheets and a duvet or comforter (be sure to purchase an extra pair of sheets).

Furniture: Space is usually pretty cramped in dorm rooms, but a folding chair like a papasan style chair is a great option for friends or study buddies. Bed risers will offer you additional space under your bed, which you will love! Find some great under-the-bed bins and storage and you can store everything from extra clothes to snacks under your bed (store snacks in sealed bins only, in case you have hungry ants!). Don’t forget things like adhesive tabs to hang things, and a dry erase board to write reminders or a class schedule on.

Laundry and cleaning: Yep, you’ll be doing your own laundry! Don’t forget things like detergent, fabric softener and stain remover spray. You may also want a lingerie bag for delicates, and the ever-useful roll (or two or three!) of quarters for machines that accept them, though some colleges use a card system. A folding drying rack can also be stowed under your bed. If your dorm allows/requires them, pack travel size cleaning items like bathroom and counter spray, wood polish, febreeze, and dusting “swiffers” to do some cleaning when needed.

Extras: It’s easy to overlook some of the things you’ll really wish you had in your dorm room! Such as: lip balm, extension cords, spare batteries, lamps, flashlights, flash drives, printer ink, folders, hole punch, post-its, hairties, extra highlighters and pens, first aid kit, measuring cups, rain gear, band aids, a thermometer, and a tote that you can double up to use as a weekend bag!

Feeling a little more ready to start packing? We hope this handy list has helped you think through the things you might have overlooked! Keep your eyes on our blog for other tips for college-bound seniors, and of course, the portraits of the amazing Paige Pearson Photography grads!
